Maintaining a safe workplace
Workplace safety is incredibly serious. It is necessary for all employers to make sure that their workplace is keeping up with OSHA guidelines, and that it is a healthy and positive workplace environment. It is also the employees’ responsibility to follow OSHA guidelines, and to report all hazards to their supervisors immediately.
There are high risks associated with manual labor. It is the employers’ duty to take care of their employees, and to make sure that they are ready to represent their company safely and efficiently.
It’s important for employers and employees to regularly assess their workplace’s safety. You can’t be satisfied with your workplace’s conditions just because no one has been injured yet. It is the obligation of the employer to double-check the employees’ understanding of workplace safety.
If you or someone you work with has suffered from a workplace related injury, report it to whoever is in charge of injuries on your worksite.
Here are some potential guidelines and methods for employers and employees.
Employers
- Supply all necessary safety gear to your employees.
- Maintain an encouraging and non-toxic work environment so your employees can feel safe bringing up any issues.
- Make sure you have provided adequate safety training.
- Stay up to date on new safety protocols and emergency procedures in case any natural or workplace disasters occur.
- Make sure everyone knows where first aid kits and fire extinguishers are located.
- Make sure someone who is trained in first aid is on duty at all times.
- Check to see if all workers have been provided with resources that contain all the safety information they need.
- Identify all potential biohazards that could make your employees sick.
- Provide all tools needed to perform the job. Make sure everyone on the work site is trained to use them properly. If your workplace utilizes forklifts, wheelbarrows, or other large and hazardous equipment, make sure everyone with the clearance to use them has been trained and certified fully.
Employees
- Wear all of your necessary safety gear.
- Be completely aware of your surroundings. Look for spills on the floor, and clear your workplace of clutter. Keep the emergency exits clear.
- Label hazardous areas with applicable signs.
- Stay hydrated! Sufficient water intake is key to maintaining your physical well-being.
- Maintain proper posture, especially when lifting heavy items.
- Make sure that your ladders are always steady and secure. Do not use improvised ladders made of other items.
- Don’t skip any breaks for efficiency. You might end up making mistakes on the job you wouldn’t have made if you gave yourself time to relax.
- Do not prioritize workplace efficiency over your health. An injury is a horrible thing to deal with, and can disrupt total workflow. Your health is way more important than your company’s efficiency.
- Make sure to consistently speak with your workplace supervisor to make sure they are performing their responsibilities. If you still have concerns about any risks associated with your job, request for your supervisor to meet with a safety expert.
- Follow all procedures present in the workplace during a disaster. Contact your supervisor if you’re concerned.
- Avoid taking any shortcuts. Rushing through things to save time might end up contribute to greater systemic failures within the workplace, endangering yourself and others.
- Report any and all unsafe work conditions to your supervisor. If they don’t take this seriously, it may be time to contact OSHA or the Better Business Bureau.
Employees should never perform unsafe activities. Your job is replaceable; your body parts are not. No job is worth lifelong physical harm.
